The Elementary School Counselor / Behavior Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the social-emotional and behavioral wellbeing of all students. This position provides direct services to students, collaborates with teachers and families, and leads systems that promote positive school culture and inclusion. The role bridges counseling and behavioral intervention, ensuring that every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Some specific responsibilities include:
Student Support &
Intervention
- Provide counseling services for
individuals and small groups to support social, emotional, and behavioral
development.
- Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments
(FBAs) and develop Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) using data-driven
approaches.
- Implement and monitor Tier 2 and Tier 3
interventions to address student needs, both individually and in small
groups.
- Collaborate closely with teachers to
design and implement behavior supports and differentiated strategies
within classrooms.
- Teach and model self-regulation, problem‐solving, and restorative practices to
help students build lifelong skills.
- Serve as a member of the Student Support
Services Team, ensuring consistent processes, timely follow-up, and data
tracking.
- Partner with the Life Centered Education
(LCE) program to support students with unique learning or behavioral
needs.
Systems Leadership & Data
- Lead or co-facilitate SST meetings and
ensure accurate documentation of intervention plans and outcomes.
- Maintain and analyze data related to
behavioral interventions, referrals, and progress monitoring.
- Use school-wide indicators and screening
tools to identify students requiring additional support.
- Ensure alignment between behavioral
systems and ISK’s Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework.
Collaboration & Capacity
Building
- Coach and support teachers in proactive
classroom management, trauma-informed care, and restorative approaches.
- Provide professional learning for faculty
in behavior supports, SEL practices, and classroom interventions.
- Collaborate with the Elementary
Principal, Assistant Principal, and Head of Student Support Services to
strengthen systems of care and response.
Family & Community
Engagement
- Communicate regularly with families to
share strategies that promote consistency between home and school.
- Partner with parents to support student
growth, addressing emotional or behavioral concerns collaboratively.
- Coordinate with external agencies and
mental health professionals when additional supports are required.
School-Wide Responsibilities
- Contribute to a positive and inclusive
school climate through visibility, engagement, and community
participation.
- Participate in co-curricular programs,
intercultural trips, and relevant committees.
- Serve as a point person for child
protection concerns and ensure ISK policies are upheld.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Counseling, School
Psychology, Special Education, or Applied Behavior Analysis preferred.
- Certification and/or licensure in school
counseling, psychology, or behavioral support.
- Minimum 5 years of teaching and/or
counseling experience, with at least 2 years of experience in behavioral
intervention or social-emotional support.
- Demonstrated expertise in:
- Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions
- Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and
Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)
- Positive Behavioral Interventions and
Supports (PBIS)
- Restorative and trauma-informed practices
- Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
- Strong collaboration skills and ability
to coach teachers in classroom management and student regulation
strategies.
- Experience working in international or
multicultural settings and with programs such as Life Centered Education
(LCE).
- Competence with technology tools (Google
Suite and related educational platforms).
- Fluent English speaker with excellent
communication and interpersonal skills.
