Health, Safety and Environment Associate
Responsibilities
Build and maintain safety systems
- Translate
health, safety, and environmental policies into clear procedures,
guidelines, and work instructions to support effective implementation.
- Ensure
all procedures align with Kenyan and Rwandan laws and international
standards from organisations like the International Labour Organization
and the World Health Organization.
- Identify
safety and environmental risks in daily operations and projects; design
and track measures to control or remove them.
- Keep
procedures and guidelines up to date through regular review and
stakeholder input.
Lead training and awareness
- Design
and deliver training sessions for staff, drivers, and partners to
strengthen understanding of safety and environmental practices.
- Oversee
ongoing driver safety training and refresher courses, making them
practical and engaging.
- Act
as the main contact for bus cooperatives and partners to help them meet
BasiGo’s safety standards and contractual requirements.
Support compliance and continuous improvement
- Investigate
any incidents or near misses, find the root causes, and make sure
follow-up actions are taken.
- Carry
out internal safety and environmental audits, and coordinate external
audits by regulators such as the Directorate of Occupational Safety and
Health, the National Environment Management Authority, and public health
officials.
- Track
and report key safety and environment performance metrics and prepare
quarterly updates for the leadership team.
Champion environmental responsibility
- Devlop
and implement waste management procedures to reduce, reuse, and safely
dispose of waste, including batteries and vehicle parts.
- Help
create emergency response plans and run practice drills to make sure teams
are ready for any incidents.
Requirements
Experience and
background
- Three
or more years in health, safety, and environmental roles, ideally within
transport, logistics, or manufacturing industries.
- Experience
creating and running training programs.
- Familiarity
with safety and environmental regulations in Kenya and Rwanda.
- Recognised
certifications in safety and environment management (such as NEBOSH, IOSH,
or OSHA).

- Clear
communicator, able to explain technical issues in simple language.

to detail and commitment to doing things right.
