Key Responsibilities
Patron Services
- Assist library patrons (students, faculty, and staff) with
locating and using library resources.
- Provide reference and information services, including
answering queries and guiding users in research and information retrieval.
- Conduct library orientations and tours for new users.
Circulation and Resource Management
- Oversee circulation desk operations, including checking in and
out library materials, managing holds and reserves, and handling overdue
items.
- Maintain accurate records of library transactions and user
accounts.
- Assist with the processing, cataloging, and shelving of new
library materials.
Supervision, User Assistance and Training
- Supervise and provide training for junior library assistants,
student workers, and volunteers.
- Coordinate work schedules and assignments for support staff.
- Ensure that library policies and procedures are followed by
all staff members.
- Assist library patrons with accessing and using electronic
resources.
- Develop and deliver training sessions and instructional
materials (e.g., guides, tutorials) on using e-resources effectively.
- Provide support for library reference services, particularly
in the area of electronic resources.
Collection Maintenance
- Assist with the organization and maintenance of library
collections, including shelving, shelf-reading, and weeding.
- Conduct inventory checks and report any discrepancies or
issues with library materials.
- Help with the preparation of materials for bindery and repair.
E-Resources Management
- Assist in the acquisition, licensing, and renewal of
electronic resources, including databases, e-journals, and e-books.
- Maintain accurate records of electronic resource
subscriptions, licenses, and usage statistics.
- Monitor and troubleshoot access issues, working with vendors
and IT staff to resolve problems promptly.
Technical Support and Troubleshooting
- Provide technical support for electronic resource access
issues, including authentication problems, broken links, and platform
errors.
- Collaborate with IT and vendors to ensure the seamless
integration of electronic resources with library systems (e.g., library
catalog, discovery layer).
- Develop and maintain documentation for troubleshooting common
e-resource access issues.
Data Analysis and Reporting
- Collect and analyze usage statistics for electronic resources
to inform collection development and budgeting decisions.
- Generate regular reports on electronic resource usage,
expenditures, and access issues for library administration.
Collaboration and Communication
- Liaise with vendors and publishers to manage electronic
resource subscriptions and resolve access issues.
- Work with other library departments to integrate electronic
resources into the library’s overall collection and services.
- Participate in library committees and working groups related
to electronic resources and digital services.
Continuous Improvement
- Stay current with trends and developments in electronic
resources and digital library services.
- Recommend and implement improvements to electronic resource
management processes and systems.
- Participate in professional development opportunities,
including workshops, conferences, and training sessions.
Administrative Support
- Assist with the preparation of statistical reports and other
administrative documentation as required.
- Handle routine correspondence and communications related to
library operations.
- Manage supply inventory and order necessary materials and
equipment.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science with
IT/ICT Option
- Master’s Degree will be an added advantage
- Minimum 5 years’ experience working with e-resources in a
University Library
- Must be a member of a relevant Professional Body
- Demonstrated experience with library systems, digital
libraries, and information technologies.
- Proficiency in cataloging standards (e.g., MARC), metadata
schemas and library protocols (e.g., Z39.50).
- Experience with integrated library systems (ILS) or library
management systems (LMS)
- Familiarity with library discovery platforms (e.g. EBSCO
Discovery Service) and open-source software (e.g., Koha).
Skills and Competencies
- Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving skills,
particularly related to electronic resources and digital content.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the
ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the
ability to provide clear and concise instructions and documentation.
- Customer service orientation with the ability to work
effectively with diverse library users and staff.
- Proficiency in data analysis and reporting, with experience
using tools such as Excel or statistical software.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the
ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
