supporting literacy, and strengthening the surrounding community. Volunteers
play a key role in delivering programs and services that help every child
discover the joy of reading and the power of knowledge.
Role Description
The
Volunteer Children and Student Librarian is a volunteer, on-site role based at
Kadibo Community Library in Nairobi County, Kenya. The volunteer will support
daily library operations, including organizing and shelving materials,
assisting children and students in finding age-appropriate books, and
maintaining an inviting and orderly reading environment. The role includes
planning and leading reading circles, homework support sessions, and basic
literacy or study skills activities. The volunteer will help manage circulation
tasks such as lending and returning books, updating simple records, and guiding
users on library rules and services. Collaboration with other volunteers,
teachers, and caregivers to promote library programs and outreach activities is
also expected.
Qualifications
- Certificate/Diploma
in Library & Information Science, Librarianship, or related field (students,
recent graduates & graduates are welcome to apply)
- Knowledge
of Library Services and Library Science practices, such as organizing
collections, basic cataloging, and supporting users in accessing
materials.
- Experience
or interest in public services, including welcoming visitors, answering
questions, and supporting community-focused library initiatives.
- Ability
to engage children and young adults in reading, learning activities, and
positive use of library spaces.
- Strong
communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient, inclusive, and
child-centered approach.
- Familiarity
with young adult literature and children’s books, with the ability to
recommend appropriate reading materials based on age and interests.
- Ability
to work full-time on-site and adapt to a community-focused environment.
- Prior
experience in education, tutoring, youth work, or libraries is an
advantage but not required.
