Accounting Assistant Job in Kenya - IRES

We are looking for a dependable and eager-to-learn Accounting Assistant to support our Company Accountant in the day-to-day running of the finance function. You will work closely under the direct guidance of the Accountant, handling routine bookkeeping tasks, data entry, and administrative finance duties so that the Accountant can focus on higher-level analysis and reporting. This is an ideal role for someone who is early in their accounting career and looking to gain hands-on experience in a structured, supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

Working under the instruction and supervision of the Company Accountant, you will:

General Accounting & Bookkeeping Support

  • Enter financial transactions into the accounting system accurately and on time.
  • File and maintain supporting documents such as receipts, invoices, and payment records.

  • Assist with bank reconciliations by gathering and matching transaction data.
  • Help prepare journal entries as directed by the Accountant.
  • Keep ledgers and records organised and up to date for easy retrieval.

Accounts Payable & Receivable Support

  • Receive, sort, and log supplier invoices for the Accountant’s review and approval.
  • Follow up with vendors or customers on missing documents or payment queries.
  • Prepare payment schedules   and draft remittance advices under the Accountant’s guidance.
  • Issue customer invoices as instructed and record incoming payments.
  • Track outstanding payables and receivables and flag overdue items to the Accountant.

Tax & Compliance Support

  • Gather and organise data needed for VAT, withholding tax, and other statutory filings.
  • Maintain a filing calendar and remind the Accountant of upcoming compliance deadlines.
  • Scan, file, and archive tax returns, receipts, and compliance documents.
  • Assist in retrieving records during internal or external audit processes.

Financial Reporting Support

  • Collate data and run standard report templates as directed by the Accountant.
  • Cross-check figures and flag discrepancies before reports are finalised.
  • Maintain spreadsheets used for budget tracking and expense monitoring.
  • Perform basic data entry and formatting to support management report preparation.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA K or ACCA finalist is required.

Experience

  • 1+ year of accounting or bookkeeping experience (internship or attachment experience welcomed).
  • Basic familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Zoho or Sage) is a plus.
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft Excel and general office tools.
