Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities for the position are as
hereunder:
- Verification of cover on new claims and ensuring that policy
conditions have been complied with and adequate reserves made.
- Communication with insureds to get relevant claim
documentation and give guidance on Court attendance.
- Appointment of service providers to handle company matters and
maintenance of a register for such appointments.
- Liaising with external advocates and insureds to ensure that
witnesses are availed during hearings and proper witness statements and
documentation availed to external advocates at the point of filing
defences.
- Giving well researched opinions on the likely outcome of
matters in court and on settlement parameters in case of negotiations.
- Reviewing ongoing cases and advising the Legal Manager
accordingly.
- Providing continuous supervision of the legal department
staff.
- Assisting in maintenance of documentation and legal databases.
- Ensuring payments are raised in good time, authorized and
forwarded to Finance Department. Following up on judgment payments to
avoid executions.
- Ensuring appeal instructions are given on time and appeal
deposits made in good time.
- Regular bring ups on all matters in Court to ensure they are
updated.
- Giving Management opinions on changes in the law that would
affect the Company.
- Attending Court as a witness for the Company.
- Perusal of Court files to establish position of litigation.
- Any other duties pertinent to the Legal Department.
- Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
Skills and Competencies Required
- An eye for detail, strong organisational skills and able to
take responsibility for own workload;
- Demonstrated integrity and professional competence as
reflected in work performance and results;
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills;
- Strong team leadership skills;
- Must be a team player.
Experience
- A minimum of 5 years post admission working experience within
the insurance sector;
- Academic and Professional Qualifications required
- Bachelor of Laws Degree from a recognized institution;
- Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law;
- An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid Practicing
Certificate;
- A registered member of the Law Society of Kenya in good
standing;
